Value to Our Future
I
Water Management
As a responsible corporate citizen, Ziraat Bank develops and implements projects for the conscious and careful consumption of water resources, critical for sustaining all life on our planet.
Global statistics on climate change, one of the most important problems of our planet, indicate that clean water resources are rapidly diminishing. Scientific findings revealing that Türkiye is among the water-poor countries require individuals and institutions to act responsibly in water consumption.
As a responsible corporate citizen, Ziraat Bank places emphasis on water conservation through the efficient use of water resources and effective wastewater management, in line with national and international standards.
Responsible and efficient use of water
Water and wastewater management was carefully observed during the construction of the Ziraat Towers located in the Istanbul Financial Center. Efficient irrigation systems were selected to reduce water consumption. Diversity of plant species was ensured in landscaping, with a preference for local and adapted plants, while avoiding the use of turf grass.
Clean domestic water in the Istanbul Finance Center Ziraat Towers is provided through the mechanical volume in the 7th basement floor and the mechanical areas on the mezzanine floors in Tower-1 and Tower-2. For hot water supply, the shower system in the basement and podium floors and the boiler system in the 7th basement floor for the restaurant-café spaces are used, while the hot water requirement in wet areas is provided by local electric heaters. In order to ensure water efficiency in the building, faucets complying with the criteria specified in the specifications have been used in wet areas.
In the Göztepe Guesthouse Project and the Altunizade and Erenköy Residential Projects, the aim is to achieve water efficiency without compromising user comfort by using efficient water fixtures compliant with EPA (US Environmental Protection Agency) standards. Gray water is planned to be utilized in reservoirs and garden irrigation. The use of cultivated turf grass was avoided in landscaping green areas, with water-efficient plant species and irrigation systems instead integrated into the project
Waste Water Management
An investment of EUR 25,000 was made at Ziraat Towers to install a water treatment system for recovering backwash water. Backwash water from the main clean water treatment system and the cooling tower feeding water treatment system is collected in a tank by establishing an additional system. An average of 75 m3 of water is recovered daily and the stored backwash water is used for vehicle washing and landscape irrigation.
The condensate water from the cooling systems in Ziraat Towers is used for garden irrigation. A recycling facility was established for the reuse of gray water in Ziraat Towers, significantly reducing reliance on tap water.
Ziraat Bank meticulously revises projects and implementations in line with local government directives on wastewater management for new or renovated branches in their respective locations.
Water footprint inventory study
The organizational boundaries of Ziraat Bank’s 2024 water footprint inventory study; Head Office, money group centers, all domestic and overseas branches, and the operations of 1819 facilities were included in the system boundaries. Under the operational control approach, Ziraat Bank’s operational control of water use and water discharge arising from its operations is fully included in the calculations.
Calculating the water footprint is of great importance for the efficient use of water resources, reducing environmental impacts, and promoting conscious consumption for a sustainable future. Accordingly, water footprint calculations were conducted this year in accordance with the “ISO 14046 Water Footprint” Standard. The concentration values used in the calculations were determined in line with the criteria in accordance with the Water Pollution Control Regulation within the scope of national legislation.
Consumption-based calculations conducted within the Head Office have led to more accurate and reliable results on water use. The water footprint of money group centers and branches is tracked separately, enabling more detailed analyses. Digitalization has facilitated detailed analysis of calculations for each facility, while enhancing data management and enabling more effective monitoring of sustainability performance.
